Past Work
We don’t live in the past.
We honor our past work with the respect and scrutiny it deserves. For years under a different name and leadership, we commissioned design-driven work. Despite a number of successful productions with outstanding designers, ultimately that mission did not serve the artists and audiences the way it should have. With our new focus, we are more determined than ever to give the American and New York public the theatre it deserves.
With the below pieces in the rear view mirror and our mission now completely in focus, we boldly move into a new era of making new work.
Suddenly (2018)
SUDDENLY is a new play adapted from the 1954 film of the same name, starring Frank Sinatra, about an attempted presidential assassination that rocks a quiet town in northern California. Set against a post-war backdrop but staged with contemporary urgency, this intense political thriller explores a particularly American culture of violence.
Solstice Party! (2017)
A group of friends gather to celebrate the Summer Solstice together in the deep Upstate New York woods behind an old farmhouse; a gathering that quickly turns into a game of survival. Written as a Jonestown parable for the Trump era, playwright Susan Soon He Stanton explores themes of “group-think” and betrayal that instigate our deepest primal fears.
The Incredible Fox Sisters
(2015)
The Fox sisters have a dirty secret they’re ready to share. They’ve been talking to the town peddler, Mr. Splitfoot ... who’s been murdered, dead and buried for five years. His dearly departed soul is haunting his old home in Hydesville, New York, where the girls now live. Don’t you believe them? You are cordially invited to an evening with Leah, Maggie, Kate, and the devil. Join the séance and witness for yourself the spiritual powers of The Incredible Fox Sisters.
Bohemian Lights (2014)
Meet Max Estrella, a blind poet, on the last night of his life. Through a groundbreaking integration of film with live theatre, BOHEMIAN LIGHTS unravels a dark whirlwind satire of political Spain and her starving artists. This production represents the world premiere of a new adaptation of Ramón Valle-Inclán’s masterwork Luces de Bohemia, the English-language U.S. premiere, and only the second ever U.S. production in any capacity.
Other Early Work and Programs
We Are Live (2013)
An immersive film/theatre piece compiled from Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1950 thriller Stage Fright, WE ARE LIVE follows the on-and-off stage lives of a group of radio performers as they navigate a mysterious backstage murder while live on the air of the WLSC Special Radio Features Division. Premiered at the Access Theater.
Macbeth (2012)
A reimagining of William Shakespeare’s MACBETH at the Shop Theater/NYU. MACBETH paired Shakespeare’s bloody masterpiece with the primal aggression of hand-to-hand combat, compressing the play’s action into a highly volatile boxing match. Inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movements of the year, MACBETH resulted in an ultra-modern, yet equally timeless exploration of corruption in power, and the struggle to stay top-dog.
Screening Series (2015-2020)
This program invited the public into our screening room for an up-close look at both new and classic films. Screenings were programmed throughout the year, both independently and in conjunction with works-in-progress, and often included additional activities such as talkbacks, panel discussions, and special guests. Screenings were hosted in a casual, BYOB setting from the company’s home base in Brooklyn.
Mexico (2013)
A radio play based on Gertrude Stein’s groundbreaking modernist text.
Clue (2015)
The cult classic film, adapted for the stage. A staged reading was presented in February 2015 at the Spanish Benevolent Society in New York City.
THE JUMP (2013)
A new dance piece inspired by La Jota, a traditional courtship dance originating from Spain. Premiered at the 2013 Fab! Festival.
Design Labs/Residencies
Our labs were exploratory workshops that provided dedicated space, time, and resources for designers to experiment with elements of scenery, lighting, costumes, sound, and/or video in tandem with the development of new play commissions. Our design residencies provided one early to mid-career designer with a residency stipend, tailored professional development & support, access to the Live Source office in Brooklyn, and design positions on all works in development with the company.
